- When you create your application in SONIS, please remember your e-mail and PIN as you will need that to return to your application and after submission to access the checklist
- Remember to use the Application Checklist for the program you are applying to.
- Before you submit your application, please be sure that it is complete with ALL documents attached
- You will be contacted regarding any missing items prior to the deadline date
- Log on to SONIS and click on the Applicant tab to review the admissions checklist for your program and to track your application process
- You will be notified of the next step once your submission is complete

We use an admission rubric (scorecard) when reviewing applications.
Points are awarded in the following categories:
- Previous Healthcare Experience
- Admission Essay
- Scores on the TEAS Exam (for ASN applicants)
- Your Grade Point Average (GPA) from the school or university you attended most recently,
- Your GPA scores on Science, Math, and English courses
If our initial review of your application indicates that you would be a good fit for our school and your program of choice, you will be asked to take part in a formal interview. Your interview score is then added to your overall application score.
To determine which applicants will be accepted into the program, applications are put in order based on final admission scores. Our Admission Committee reviews each application carefully and makes admission decisions based on the information gathered as part of the application process and interview.
Actions Applicants Should Consider When Looking to Strengthen Their Application
- Consider taking the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) exam several months in advance. If you don’t score well, you will have time to study and retake the exam before the application deadline. The company that provides the exam also has study materials available by clicking here.
- Consider taking one or two courses, such as English Composition or Introduction to Psychology, to demonstrate that you are able complete do college level work. Courses may be taken at St. Joseph School of Nursing or any accredited school or university that is convenient to you, including online classes at a local community college.
- Be as thoughtful as possible when writing your admission essay, and when possible, provide real-life examples of how you think about nursing or how you have positively affected the lives of those you have cared for. Stories and examples help ensure that applications standout in the minds of reviewers.
